Lagoons of Iceland

One of the best things to do in Iceland is to soak in one of their geothermal hot springs. There are so many options that it can be overwhelming to choose. You can still get the Geothermal experience at many accommodations in a much more private setting without the additional cost. Here are 4 options close to the Golden Circle with some pros and cons to each as well as a few we haven’t tried but remain on the bucket list!
Blue Lagoon -click to Book
This is one of the most popular attractions in Iceland and you’ll read a lot of negative opinions about the Blue Lagoon. It is crowded and touristy and its not the most peaceful or serene experience but it really is fun to grab a cocktail, hang out and indulge in some facial masks! As a group outing especially with kids, the Blue Lagoon actually surpassed my expectations. Blue Lagoon sits in Grindvik, an area that has seen a lot of volcanic activity recently. It’s hard to say how much longer the Blue Lagoon will survive the volcanic eruptions. Some pros to Blue Lagoon are their incredible line of skincare and their kid friendly options. At the writing of this post there are 3 day packages to choose from and the price varies based upon the time chosen and amenities included. Prices start at $106/pp -$196 pp which includes skincare products to take home. Book directly with Blue Lagoon (click on title above) for seamless communication and customer service. There are many GTG and Viator tour options but we found booking direct had the best prices and ease of entry. Many people visit after a red eye flight while they wait for their accommodation check in since its close to Keflavik Airport.

Sky Lagoon– click for more Info
To date, this is my favorite hot spring experience. A true spa like experience, the ritual package is highly recommended and includes a variety of self service treatments that have a more authentic wellness component that the Blue Lagoon. At the time of writing this the Saman package prices at $102 per adult and includes public changing facilities and access to the skol ritual circuit. Like, Blue Lagoon, you must book a specific time slot and package. Children under the age of 12 are prohibited from Sky Lagoon which has its pros and cons. There is a swim up bar where you can enjoy a nice cocktail overlooking the Atlantic. We recommend sunset as there are some incredible views from the main pool!

Secret Lagoon-click to Book
The Secret Lagoon is located in Fludir very close to the Tomato Farm. At only $42 per person, this is a more budget friendly thermal pool experience. The Secret Lagoon feels more like a community pool experience as you mingle with Icelandic families as well as tourists. Please note that you will be required to shower without clothing or bathing suits in the public showers before entering the pool. As in many parts of Europe, nudity is more common and embraced than in the United States. This type of experience is not for everyone and some members of our party chose to bypass for this reason. We did not book this in advance and were able to get tickets the same day. Combining this with a few Golden Circle sights and the Friðheimar Tomato Farm makes for a great day! Like many of the thermal pool experience outlined here, we recommend booking direct through their website in the link above.

Hvammsvik Hot Springs– click to Book
This Hot spring experience has been on my radar for a few years now but I have not had the opportunity to try it. I love the idea of the combination of natural water and the hot spring experience. This is definately on my list for our next visit!
