Newport, Rhode Island: A Celebration Destination

Newport, Rhode Island is located an hour south of Boston and features a variety of oceanside activities, historical tours and charming boutique shopping making Newport, Rhode Island the perfect New England getaway! Newport draws almost 4 million visitors each year, predominantly in the summer months and so visiting in the off season is always our preference for a slower feel but every once in a while, visiting Newport in the Summer just feels like the right thing to do…even if prices are higher and the crowds are swelling.
We spent a weekend in Newport to celebrate Lindsey’s 21st Birthday because Newport just felt like the perfect celebration destination for a girl who loves the ocean! With a variety of fun, local activities and a quaint walkable downtown, celebrating a special occasion or planning a girls weekend makes Newport, RI the perfect weekend getaway. Plan A Boat Trip for your group: Click here for a variety of boat charter options from Newport Harbor
In our opinion, the best way to see Newport is from the water. Sailing through Newport Harbor was easily one of the highlights of our birthday celebration! There’s something magical about feeling the ocean breeze, clinking glasses of bubbly, and cruising past the stunning yachts and historic mansions that line the waterfront. The harbor is alive with energy—sails catching the wind, seabirds overhead, and the sparkling water stretching out around you—but on board it’s all laughter, photos, and soaking in those carefree “this is what weekends are for” moments. Newport from the water feels both glamorous and relaxed, the perfect balance for a getaway with your favorite crew. @socialbnbexperience can also book a boat cruise for you- see here for some of their options!

We chose the AQUIDNECK for our boat cruise for a few key reasons:
1) They allowed us to bring beer and wine on board in small soft coolers and they allowed food to be brought on board- see above pic of our “boat snacks” charcuterie creation.
2) They allowed others under 21 to board with us
3) They were available and were reasonably priced at $53/per person in August- (we waited until the last minute to book this and many options were sold out)- we recommend booking 3 months in advance for the best selection
Despite our last minute efforts, sometimes things just work out and The STAFF on the Aquidneck were extremely helpful and we loved just cruising the bay with Rose’ and snacks in hand!

Visiting The Newport Mansions
Visiting the Newport Mansions is like stepping straight into the Gilded Age—where glittering parties, sprawling lawns, and ceilings dripping with chandeliers were just another Saturday night. These “summer cottages” (if you can call a 70-room mansion a cottage!) give such a fun peek into the over-the-top lifestyle of America’s wealthiest families. Strolling through the ballrooms and peeking out at the ocean views, it’s easy to imagine the glitz, the glamour, and the gossip that once filled these halls. It’s history with a dash of sparkle, and the perfect excuse to channel your inner high-society queen for the afternoon.

The Top 3 Visited Newport Mansions:
Here are the top 3 Newport Mansions most visitors (and locals!) recommend:
- The Breakers – The crown jewel of Newport, built by the Vanderbilt family. It’s the largest and most opulent of the mansions, with jaw-dropping ocean views and over-the-top Italian Renaissance design.
- Marble House – Another Vanderbilt masterpiece, this one is known for its Versailles-inspired interiors and the dramatic Chinese Tea House on the lawn overlooking the water.
- The Elms – A slightly more understated (but still extravagant) estate, modeled after a French château, with beautifully landscaped gardens and fountains that make the grounds just as stunning as the interiors.

Walking The Cliff Walk
The Cliff Walk in Newport, RI is one of the city’s most iconic experiences, combining rugged coastal beauty with a front-row view of Gilded Age glamour. The 3.5-mile trail officially begins at First Beach (Easton’s Beach), where you’ll find parking and the main trailhead, and can take about 2–3 hours to complete depending on your pace. If you’re short on time, you can also start at Narragansett Avenue, near The Breakers, for a shorter stretch with some of the most famous views. Along the way, you’ll pass crashing waves, rocky coves, and sweeping ocean vistas on one side, while the grand lawns and ornate facades of mansions like Marble House and The Breakers rise up on the other. Parts of the trail are smoothly paved and easy, while other sections turn more rugged and uneven, adding a little adventure to the otherwise breezy coastal stroll.
🌊 Quick Tips for Newport’s Cliff Walk

Length: 3.5 miles one way (about 7 miles round trip).
Time: 2–3 hours depending on pace and photo stops.

A Day At The Beach
Newport offers some extraordinary beaches with very creative names… First Beach, Second Beach, etc. Parking at these beaches can be tricky and will run you $25 a pop but there’s nothing more relaxing than chilling oceanside. First Beach or Easton Beach is the largest and most popular beach and you can park here and access the beach as well as the Cliff walk for a two for one deal. We recommend getting there early or going for sunset for a more relaxed feel.
We prefer Second beach for its proximity to Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge. Grab some bikes and head to this extraordinary wildlife refuge for stunning views and beautiful walking paths with gorgeous views over the Atlantic! Second beach is home to some incredible surf, so if you are looking to try it out – this is a great option for renting a board or taking a lesson: Elemental Surf School.

Exploring Downtown Newport
Spend the afternoon or evening walking the streets of downtown Newport and soak in its New England charm. This is also where you will want to go for a night on the town! There are countless small boutique shops and a wide variety of restaurants to choose from- just wander the streets (take a stroll off the main Thames Street for some charming street views and hidden shops) and find that perfect souvenir and be sure stop for an ice cream or a sweet treat!
